| USNS Medger Evers
The NAACP CA/HI State Conference is invited to join the NAACP San Diego Branch in this historic occasion and recognition of the work of former Mississippi Field Secretary Medgar Evers as the USNS Medgar Evers (T-AKE 13) is publicly christened. This public event takes place on Saturday, November 12, 2011 at 9 am (gates open at 8 am) at General Dynamics NASSCO located at 2798 East Harbor Drive (28th & East Harbor Drive), San Diego, CA 92113. The dresscode for civilians is business attire. The branch is also joining with the BCA (Black Contractors Association), Neighborhood House Association, the Collins Group and other communiity organizations for a reception with Dr. Myrlie Evers-Williams on Thursday, November 10, 2011 at 5:30 pm for a press conference and community reception beginning at 6:00 pm. The BCA is located at 6125 Imperial Avenue, San Diego, CA 92114. (Those in the So Cal area were here earlier this year for the branch training and it is the present location of the NAACP SD Branch office). USNS Medgar Evers (T-AKE-13) is a Lewis and Clark-class dry cargo ship of the United States Navy, named in honor of World War II veteran[3] and civil rights activist Medgar Evers. The Navy announced the naming on 9 October 2009.[1] Medgar Evers' keel was laid down on 26 October 2010 by the National Steel and Shipbuilding Company in San Diego.[4]
